Week 2 Story: Generosity for Others

It was a windy and cold day in Oklahoma as the leaves were just turning red.

There were three good friends: Nick, Beth, and Ruth. Nick was the "goody goody" of the group. He always pushed Beth and Ruth to be better people in life. He advised Beth and Ruth to be charitable and to be nice to others regardless of their situations.

Beth that day went running around the park. As she was running she found a beanie that had fallen on the ground. She looked in front of her to see if anyone was around. After looking in front of her only she decided to take the hat for herself because she liked it.

Ruth was at school when she found an extra lunch sitting on a table near her. It appeared to be untouched. She looked around to see if anyone was going to claim it. She deemed that no one was going to collect it and put it into a bag to eat later.

Nick, Beth, and Ruth made plans to go to the store that day. Nick was a working student who had his necessities and lived a very modest life; at the store he bought a blanket. They were driving through the city on their way home from the store. Nick was driving underneath a bridge as he saw a man with a sign. As he approached the stoplight, he realized that the man was homeless. The man looked cold as the Oklahoman weather was just beginning to turn fall. When Nick was close enough to greet the man, Nick mentioned to Ruth and Beth that they should try to help the man.

Beth extended her hand out with the beanie she found. Ruth offered up the food that she had gotten at school. Nick offered the man the blanket he had just bought at the store since it was starting to become chilly. Nick also looked into his wallet to see how much cash he had. Nick budgeted in his head how much he could give and still get by with his week. Nick handed the man some money; they all greeted the man goodbye and resumed their trek back home.

 Author's Note:

The idea of this story came my thoughts towards the story "The Hare that Was not Afraid to Die" by Marie L. Shedlock. In this story, the hare was willing to die (also foreshadowed in the name) to help someone else. I thought the lesson's idea was important, however, the extent of the how far the lesson should be executed was not what I would have done. People should help others and should care about others. My mom has always taught me you can't give a piece of yourself to someone if you're not whole. I wrote this story trying to embody the lesson my mom taught me while combing it with "The Hare that Was not Afraid to Die".  I also made the characters of this story into humans for fun.

  1. Hi Jessica,

I like that you changed the characters into humans. It works well for the retelling as Nick was the good person who changed Beth and Ruth. I am curious about what their situations were that they were hesitant to be charitable. A bit more information on the background of these characters would help improve the story.

Overall, I do like your retelling of "The Hare that was not Afraid to Die."

  2. Hey Jessica!
You did an awesome job redoing the story! I love that you used Oklahoma as your main focal point for each of them. I always find it interesting how each person decides to retell these stories in the way they'd like to see them read! You did an awesome job setting the scene and great characterization. Really enjoyed reading this and it makes me want to read the original story! Keep up the great work and happy writing!

  3. Hi Jess, I really enjoyed your take on the original story. I think it’s interesting how you made the characters human and how you made the setting of the story to be real life so we can kind of see how the message of the story can apply to real life. I also really liked the message of the story as helping others out is something that everyone should do. Overall, really great retelling of the original story.
